Just What I needed
Since recently becoming a first time mother, I was searching for help in expressing the emotions I was feeling. This prayer book has it all. It contains prayers and thoughts for everything from conception to losing a child to a father's business trips to birth. I am grateful to have stumbled upon this treasure and would recommend it to all who are attempting to become parents or are considering adoption, as well as those who have achieved parenthood.

Mother, Madonna, Whore: The Idealization and Denigration of Motherhood
Published in Hardcover by Other Press, LLC (November, 1998)
Authors: Estela Weldon and Juliet Mitchell
Average review score:

MOTHERS AND POTENTIAL MOTHERS READ THIS BOOK!
I found this book fascinating. Written by a Pshychotherapist who has obviously had much experience in dealing with "hard case" personnas, it shows the most intriguing, almost disturbing, conclusions on the way some mothers and their kin relate and behave. Extreme cases are always good for then extrapolating and identifying more subtle traits in normal everyday people, including ourselves! I must say that it made me get into an "auto-therapy" mood while reading it... I was engulfed by this book, which has been written with minimized technical terms, making it of easy access to non-experts as myself.

Mount Mitchell & the Black Mountains: An Environmental History of the Highest Peaks in Eastern America
Published in Paperback by The University of North Carolina Press (03 March, 2003)
Author: Timothy Silver
Average review score:

Nature meets Culture
What a terrific book Timothy Silver has crafted! Anyone interested in mountains, hiking, fishing, environmental issues, natural history, or the local history of North Carolina's mountains will enjoy this wonderful account. Professor Silver, a historian in western North Carolina, has written a book in which Mount Mitchell stars at the center of his narrative--and both general readers and professional historians can find meaning and pleasure in his tale.

Like many environmental historians, Silver sees in the reciprocal interaction between nature and culture a larger story of a region. And he brings us this compelling story from a variety of intriguing angles. He offers his own assessments, ones generated on his extensive hiking and fishing trips in the Black Mountains of western North Carolina. He provides insight into the steamy 19th century historical controversy between rivals each seeking to determine which was the highest peak in the region--and to see who could do it first and most authoritatively. (And as a New Englander, I found the tale inviting even if our White Mountains fall short in elevation to North Carolina's peaks!) Professor Silver also examines logging practices and regional boosterism, the antecedent of eco-tourism.

The book has something that will be compelling for a wide audience of readers interested in the natural world and local history--and the style is accessible and enjoyable. Whether you've hiked a lot, love North Carolina, want to investigate stormy political and personal feuds, or wish to know more about regional environmental history, "Mount Mitchell" is a fine read. I commend it to you!

Mountain Days & Bothy Nights (Walk With Luath)

Well written stories - not just another guidebook
There are a lot of 'coffeetable' books on the market today with impressive pictures that look good in the bookshop, but once you get them home you realise there is not much content. The same is true for most guidebooks, with their 'park 100 yards past the gate, turn left at the fence' style. This however, is different, giving a real feel of the outdoors culture in the Highlands of Scotland - and there is MUCH more going on than simply parking your car, going for a walk, and returning home - through the medium of entertaining true stories. This was one of the books that inspired me (it is a good few years old, now a reprint) along with 'Always a Little Further' by Alasdair Borthwick, 'Hamish's Big Walk' by Hamish Brown, and 'Undiscovered Scotland' by WH Murray.

Just what Barron's is missing--inside views of the top schoo
Wow! I just received my copy of the guide in the mail from, yes, amazon.com, and I think it's a terrific resource. It will be of use to me and my students as i work with them to gain admission to America's top colleges. A college admissions officer told me Mitchell's guide was a great resource for her, and i can tell already it will be a great resource for me as well

Multiple Staff Ministries
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (November, 1988)
Author: Kenneth R. Mitchell
Average review score:

Best Introduction to Systems Theory re: congregations
I have read many books on the application of "family systems" or "systems" thinking and its application to congregational life, including Friedman's groundbreaking work, "Generation to Generation." Most of them were good and insightful. But for most professionals serving congregations, this kind of book is most helpful if it is concise and easy to apply to the life of the congregation we are currently serving. That is what distinguishes Mitchell's book. I found that his book was far easier to read and apply to the life of the congregations I served than any other. And you do not have to be in a Multiple Staff situation to benefit from this clear, concise, and practical book.

The Muscle Energy Manual
Published in Hardcover by Met Press (January, 1999)
Author: Fred L. Mitchell
Average review score:

The Muscle Energy Manual - A Must
This manual, one of a series of three, is, like the entire series, an example of scholarly work usually not encountered with many other manuals or textbooks that deal with an individual manual medicine technique or a compilation thereof. The organization of the series is excellent, well and insightfully written, and superbly illustrated. It serves equally as a reference text, instruction manual, and a hands-on book, both for the novice in the field and the "old hands." In summary, this book and the rest of the entire series, is the definitive text of osteopathic muscle energy techniques and approaches written by an expert and his well educated team. It should be not only on every serious practitioner's bookshelf, it should be on the center shelf. A gem for years to come, setting the standard.
